Fort Worth, Texas (31 March 2018). U.S. Navy veteran Tom Crane, Region 2 Director for the Texas Chess Association, went undefeated on his way to winning the title of 2018 Fort Worth Veterans Chess Champion. Mr. Crane is President of the Tarrant County Chess Club and a US Chess Senior Tournament Director. He is also a member of the Alliance and Arlington chess clubs as well as a member of the Tarrant and Texas Chess teams.
Army Veteran Carmen Chairez, the top ranked chess player in Round Rock, Texas, also went undefeated and won Top Veterans Open Championship Honors. Mr. Chairez is a member of the Waco Chess Club. He also is a member of the Waco and Texas Chess teams. Last Fall, he received the National Chess Master Bill Wall Texas Chess Legacy Award for outstanding service as a chess organizer, tournament director, coach, and mentor for young chess players (some of whom achieved Master level status).
The field was limited but formidable. It consisted of over 116 years of combined rated chess experience; including one expert who played on the Army Chess Team "We had 14 players registered," said Tournament Director Jim Hollingsworth, "however we overlooked this was Easter weekend."
The Fort Worth Veterans Chess Club meets on Mondays, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at the Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic at 820 and Campus Drive. Donna Gerron is the Veterans Chess Program Director.
